Not just for hobbies... I have always wanted a Dremel and this one is easy to handle, cordless not very heavy, and has a good carrying case. I have an Italian Greyhound and I use it for grooming her nails. I advise you get instructions on how to do this before trying this yourself, but it's great and fast. And of course, it's useful for all of my projects as well.
Sacrifices torque and power for portability I've had this tool for 2 years now and have used it 6 or 7 times. I originally purchased this to polish small parts.
I recently needed to do some wood grinding and sanding on a dutch door at my home. I was disappointed with the lack of torque this tool had. It would slow down with even the slightest pressure to the wood. I was miffed. I found a neighbor who had an old corded dremel. As expected, it worked perfectly and didn't slow down at all.
Just for the heck of it, I wrote Dremel an email outlining my issues with this cordless model. I received a response saying that Dremel tools aren't intended for projects where excessive torque was necessary. The email suggested that the tool bit is supposed to do all of the work. Since all of my bits are new (I haven't used any of them in the 2 years I've owned this tool!) and the corded model worked much better than the cordless model, I can only assume that Dremel knows of the limitations of this cordless model.
I wanted this tool to work well but I can't recommend it for anything except light polishing. Maybe they'll get this right eventually. For now, you will probably have a much more productive experience if you purchase a corded model.
Second one and would buy again We purchased this to replace the battery charger on the first one we bought 3 years ago. We use this to file down the nails of our two great danes. The coordless design is comfortably molded and easy to use. It was close enough in price that we figured we would just buy a new unit as we didn't know if the batter or the charger had gone bad on our first one. I use the dremel to modify my motorcycle fairings, install speakers in the door of my car, and even to cut a shock absorber in half that was stuck on my SUV. Ample power, comfortable grip, and versatile.
